BIBLE by Momo Okabe

On a recent trip to New York City, I met the lovely Miwa Susuda at Dashwood Books. For those unaware, Dashwood is perhaps the foremost location for independent photo publications in New York (and has been since its foundation in 2005). It’s the only independent bookstore in the city devoted entirely to photography. Miwa works there, but as we got chatting she told me she’s also behind Session Press – an incredible publishing company devoted entirely to new work by contemporary Japanese artists.

The most recent Session publication is BIBLE, by Tokyo-based photographer, Momo Okabe. Comprised of photographs taken in Tokyo, Miyagi and India between 2010 and 2013, there is a thoroughly visceral quality to Okabe’s work which sits somewhere between sweetness and dark, explicit confrontation. Just check out the colour palette, for a start. We could wax on about BIBLE for hours, but we’ll let the images do the talking for now. The monograph is Okabe’s second publication with Session Press; her book Dildo was released in 2013. You can find both books here.

We’ll be sharing more from Miwa and Session Press in the near future!
