Nobuyoushi Araki – ‘Love On the Left Eye’

Infamous erotic photographer Nobuyoushi Araki lost the sight in his right eye last year, due to a retinal artery obstruction. With his vision half obscured, his response has been optimistic – philosophising that with loss comes gain. Talking with NOWNESS, the Japanese photographer comments, “I say to myself that I believe I should be able to see things differently”, and with his new exhibition, Love On the Left Eye, he shares this change of vision with the viewer. The photographs in this new series of work – a combination of female nudes and floral still lifes – have been half-obscured with marker pen, providing a new, forced way of looking at objects and environments. The exhibition runs until June 21st at Tokyo’s Taka Ishii Gallery.
