Raymond Pettibon – ‘Are Your Motives Pure?’

To tie in with last Spring’s solo exhibition, Are Your Motives Pure?, at Venus Over Manhattan gallery, Raymond Pettibon published a book on one of his work’s recurring themes: surfers. The book presents the forty paintings exhibited at the gallery, all made between 1987 and 2012. These works are predominantly drawings in black ink brush sometimes enhanced with colour, and accompanied by non-sequitors, quotes and bits of poetry. Representative of Pettibon’s love for California beaches and surfing, surf paintings and the fragile characters riding those waves, it could be said the book is an metaphorical exploration of what man faces daily (and the brevity of life). Arriving with an essay by Carlo McCormick, you can find the book on Amazon.
