Strata-East Mix (Part 1)

Ahead of the Strata-East Live show at The Barbican on March 22, Gilles Peterson has put together a mammoth 3 hour mix, playing nothing but the finest music released on the legendary 1970s label, Strata-East. Founded in New York 1971, the label put out some of the best examples of the city’s post-bop, spiritual jazz, Afro-jazz — even experimental free jazz — amongst other (usually radical) releases. The discography is vast and certainly worth a meander through. Stream the first part of the mix below; part 2 and an interview between Gilles and label co-founder Charles Tolliver will apparently be online soon. If you’re interested in the live show, tickets are available here.

P.S. If you’re looking for more info on Strata-East, RBMA has a great article over here, outlining some of the label’s finest moments.
