Yes, we know we’re late on the uptake and that Sun Ra’s 100th birthday would have been last week (May 22nd), but there really is no overstating the importance of the late, great, Le Sony’r Ra. Controversial, eccentric and completely unorthodox, Sun Ra doesn’t fit comfortably into any genre (he was shunned by his jazz contemporaries for his embracement of all things electronic), but still, with current musical trends moving the way they are, it feels like Sun Ra’s influence has never been more pertinent. As well as his incredible musical output, we’ve got Ra to thank for his heavy visual aesthetic, inspiring countless others in the years since. Case in point: 1974’s trippy odyssey, Space is the Place, written by Ra and directed by John Coney.
