Besides perhaps GSJ, no one’s really offering sports journalism as visually stimulating as Victory Journal right now, (Sports Illustrated‘s swimsuit issue aside). Issue 08 offers a more premium package (thicker pages, bolder ink, et al), and explores heroes and villains of the sports world, and the ever-changing shades of grey where hated rivals transform into figures of admiration. Features include cover star, Liverpool FC forward Mario Balotelli, Henry Leutwyler’s previously unpublished photos of the icon Florence Griffith Joyner, Jeff Maysh’s tale of wrestler Ann Casey (aka Panther Girl), reappraisals of bullfighting, Muay Thai boxing and the art of LeRoy Neiman. Fittingly, Lance Armstrong, Derek Jeter and the late Soviet hockey coach Viktor Tikhonov all get a mention as well. Always worth a read.
